The bedtime challenge versus natural baby or toddler sleep ‘hacks’

When you have a baby or toddler, one of the first questions people ask you is, “Are they sleeping through the night yet?” And let’s be honest… the answer is usually “no. (and by the way that is the way nature intended for a little while anyway). But, reflexology can still help! As a Mummy myself (and reflexologist), I’ve unlocked a helpful routine.

Baby sleep can feel unpredictable, exhausting, and overwhelming. Newborns wake often, toddlers resist bedtime, and you can feel stuck without many gentle tools to encourage rest.

That’s where reflexology can play a helpful role.

Reflexology and sleep: what the research says

Unlike many “sleep hacks” you see online, reflexology actually has research behind it. Studies show that reflexology can:

• Help us sleep better, including newborns
• Support longer periods of restful sleep
• Encourage relaxation by calming the nervous system
• Benefit parents too, by reducing stress and improving their own sleep quality

Newborns, in particular, have been shown to respond positively to reflexology routines, making it a beautiful addition to those early days.

Why it works for a natural baby & toddler sleep boost

Reflexology is based on the idea that areas of the feet correspond to different parts of the body. By gently stimulating these points, we can encourage balance, relaxation, and release of tension.

At bedtime, this translates into:

• A calmer nervous system that signals to the body “it’s time to rest”
• Release of tension built up during the day (yes, babies can hold tension too!)
• Boosting those helpful hormones like oxytocin for comfort
• A soothing ritual that gives baby a sense of safety and predictability

How to add reflexology into your bedtime routine

You don’t need to carve out a huge chunk of time — just a few minutes is enough. You can try reflexology:

• After the evening bath, when baby is already calm and warm
• Before storytime or a lullaby
• As a gentle wind-down before placing them in their cot

BUT THE PERFECT TIME IS ANYTIME YOU CAN (I used to do it often when she was watching a bit of TV or while we were out for a walk)

The act of slowing down, using touch intentionally, and repeating the same soothing steps every night signals to your baby that sleep is coming.

Helping parents too

Here’s the best part: reflexology isn’t just for babies. Parents can use reflexology on themselves as part of their own wind-down routine. It helps reduce stress, improves sleep quality, and gives you a small slice of calm at the end of the day.

And let’s face it: when parents are calmer, babies feel calmer too.
